VIDEO: Myths about Fat, Carbs, & the Paleo Diet
If the fact that the work week is almost over isn’t reason enough to get you amped up this a.m., maybe the news that I have brand new web series to share with you will!
My friend Lisa over at The Skinny on Health and I have been talking about collaborating on a video series for a while now. We’re both working to become Registered Dietitians and have a lot in common (minus the fact that she’s about 2 years ahead of me in her studies). Lisa’s a California native but is currently studying in Seattle, WA.
There was no way we were going to let the fact that we’re over 1000 miles apart keep us from bringing you info on the hottest topics in health right now though, so we threw together a little Skype video to kick off our new venture.
In this first episode, Lisa helps me myth-bust some common misconceptions surrounding the Paleo Diet, coconut oil, saturated fat vs. unsaturated fat, and whether or not cutting carbs will help you lose weight. Enjoy!

Loved this video!
As a nutritionist who gives advice I definitely agree with everything Lisa said.
Carbs are our brains only source of energy, so definitely should be a big contributor to our diets . I like to keep an eye on my fat intake too , I love my nut butters but too much of a good thing is not a good thing!
Whitney English says:
Two thumbs up for carbs :) And I too try to regulate my nut butter consumption…but it’s not easy!
Kathryn @ Illustrated Nutrition says:
Great collab you two! Your questions in this video are hilarious, mostly because those are the kind of crazy questions us nutrition students get all the time! Such a great idea!
Whitney English says:
Haha thanks! So I take it you’re not on board with the egg yolk smoothie idea either?
Camille @ Challenge Mantra says:
Informative video! It’s nice to hear a back and forth discussion on health… Most of the bloggers I follow are whole30 dieters or vegan bloggers, but I don’t think anyone I read has a background in nutrition. Thanks for this!
GiGi Eats Celebrities says:
BRB – Going to make my egg yolk smoothie with coconut oil and beef lard right now! ;)
Melissa Burton says:
Love the concept of myth busting from two aspiring RD’s (I’m a proud RD and love having more people boost the profession and spread the knowledge) but there was one error onerous piece of info in the video – there are 9 calories per gram of fat not 10.
Totally agree with philosophy of not cutting out grains and moderation of fat intake (no matter what fat type it is – even coconut oil).
Wishing you much luck and success with this series and if you ever need or want a contributor, lmk. I’ll need to wear a mask because you two are way too pretty ;)
Lisa @ The Skinny on Health says:
Oh no! Did I say 10?! I don’t remember even mentioning how many calories are in a gram of fat… Yes, everyone, 9 calories per gram of fat! 4 per gram of protein or carb! :)
xo
Kristina @ Damn Ten Pounds says:
I like the new series!! I hated chemistry, so I’m looking forward to cheating and learning more from you smarty pants RD’s. I think everything should be in moderation. Even fat. I eat a lot of avocados and almonds and ever since I increased my fat intake, maintaining my weight has been SO much easier! There’s something to that.
Kristy @ Southern In Law says:
Love this video – and the honesty! I think we should all focus on actual nutrition instead of “diets” so I totally agree with you both.
I have no problems with fat – but I eat everything in moderation and that includes fat! We have to find a healthy balance of everything in our diets!
As for carbs – this girl NEEEEDS her carbs. ;)
GiselleR says:
Awesome video guys!
I love how you back up what you’re saying with science which I find is so rare with most people giving advice on different ‘diets’ these days.
Thanks for doing this and I’ll definitely be looking for the next installment :D
Also, the egg yolk smoothie is a definite no-no for me…esp if you combine it with coconut oil and beef lard like GiGi wants to HAHA
Louise@FitRadiance says:
Great video! Well, I love both fat and carbs haha. I eat nut butter everyday, along with plenty seeds. As long as it’s in moderation, it’s all good :) As for carbs, I have tried cutting back on them in the past, but it just doesn’t work for me. I get cranky, weak and tired. SO not worth it!

The video looks great. I hope you guys keep it up!
A little advice from a Youtube nerd…you might want to invest in a mic or learn a bit about sound. A lot of people will turn away from the video if the sound is off. Check out this post http://www.rok-on.net/vlogging-choosing-microphone/

Seraphina Capranos | Herbalist & Homeopath says:
I love this new series! What a great idea. You both have great energy and are easy to watch and listen to. I totally agree with everything Lisa said here, I see so many paleo junkie’s in my clinic who are loading their livers with way too much fat and using the Paleo claims as an excuse to indulge on bacon and eggs. I love your sensible approach to nutrition!
Sam Brown says:
Loved the video and looking forward to more from this series! You guys both have such a great presence on camera!
I think sometimes with these diets people are looking for a magic bullet but everyone already knows the answer – eat well and move your body. I’ve been tempted to try the paleo diet but I know that what I’m currently doing is working well for my body so I’m going to keep doing it (lots of whole grains and veggies!)
Also I think the egg yolk thing is pretty interesting – in the past few years I’ve noticed that Americans health professionals seem to have a different take on it than Aussie ones (the Australian ones don’t seem to think it’s that bad for cholesterol).
Love it! Keep doing what you’re doing :)
