Chickpea Tuna-Free Salad
This chickpea tuna-free salad sandwich has the taste and texture of tuna salad but is completely vegan. It also has tasty mix-ins like onions, celery, parsley, and a slightly sweet secret ingredient!
This recipe is a food pun-loving writer’s playground — “chickpea of the sea,” un-tuna, or my favorite rhyming variation: Chickpea “Tuna-Free” Salad.
Whatever you call it, it’s genius and delicious.

Unfortunately, I can’t take credit for the ingenuity of this vegan tuna salad rift. I’ve seen many versions online and discovered an incredibly scrumptious store-bought chickpea salad recently, which is what spurred my desire to try making it at home.
What I can offer is a #whitskitch take, which incorporates a hint of sweetness thanks to my special ingredient — apples. Don’t knock it till you try it. And seriously, you have to try it. This tuna-free salad is so good!
My husband discovered it in the fridge over the weekend and without knowing the contents, whipped himself up a sandwich that he described in one word as, “unbelievable.” I’ll take it.
My version also skips the veganaise. I’m not against it, but my thoughts are: if you can use something less processed, why not? I found that vegan yogurt. I used Forager’s plain cashew yogurt, which I scooped up on Milk & Eggs. It’s essentially just cashews and probiotics and it works magic for the moisture in this recipe.
It also incorporates onions, celery, parsley, spicy mustard, and apple cider vinegar for crunch and flavor — far from the boring tuna salad your mom used to pack for your lunch.
