Light & Frothy Green Tea Latte
It’s that time again! What time you ask? Time for the monthly Recipe Redux!
It seems like just yesterday I was gobbling up my tasty little Portobello Pizza Bites. I guess time really does fly when you’re constantly washing dishes having fun.
This month’s theme is Hot Beverages. With St. Patty’s Day on the horizon (here we go with the themes again, right), I decided to make something festive.
What’s the prettiest green beverage you can think of? Green Monster Smoothies? Nah. Green beer, blech. Green Tea Lattes? Cha-ching!
Green Tea Lattes are so pretty, yummy, and comforting in cold weather.
However, the only Green Tea Lattes I’ve ever tried are those incredibly sugary drinks from Starbucks that have about 130-370 calories per cup— and that’s with non-fat milk.
I knew I could do way better than that.
The primary ingredient in a green tea latte is Matcha.
Matcha is a finely ground Japanese green tea that contains about three times the amount of the antioxidant EGCG than in regular green tea, and several dozen times more antioxidants than blueberries, spinach, or dark chocolate.
Another benefit is that is has more caffeine that a regular cup of green tea but less than a cup of coffee. So a green tea latte is the perfect afternoon pick-me-up for anyone who doesn’t want a java jolt late in the day.
The only downside, it’s a little pricey. At Whole Foods, a jar of pure matcha costs $20, so I just picked up a single serving packet for $1.99.
Still, way under the price of a $5 Starbucks bevy though. You can also find better deals on bulk amounts on Amazon.
I kept the ingredients simple and skinny: unsweetened vanilla coconut milk (I used So Delicious) and a dash of stevia.
Perfection.
Light & Frothy Green Tea Latte
Ingredients:
1 Packet Matcha
1 C. Unsweetened Vanilla Coconut Milk (or milk of choice)
Stevia to taste
Directions:
1. Bring milk to a simmer on the stove.
2. In a small bowl, pour a little boiling water into the matcha. Whisk vigorously.
3. Add the matcha to the milk and continue to whisk, or use an immersion blender to make the mixture frothy.
4. Pour in a mug, sweeten with desired amount of stevia, and enjoy!
Total Calories: 45
If you have a fancy espresso machine, you can skip the first step and use your milk frother. Sadly, I’m still working with a crappy coffee maker so I had to get all old-fashioned with the stove.
Forget about wearing green for St. Patty’s Day — you’ll be pinching yourself, it’s that good.
Thanks to the lovely ladies over at Teaspoon of Spice and Healthy Aperture for creating this wonderful monthly celebration of healthy food. Be sure to check out all of the other fabulous recipes from my fellow Reduxers below!

Camille @ Challenge Mantra says:
Whitney, you know the way to my heart! I also use an immersion blender to froth up the milk for my tea lattes. I keep telling myself I”m going to spring for real matcha, but so far have only picked up the matcha-sugar blends since they’re a little bit cheaper

I haven’t tried a green tea latte yet, but have definitely been curious. I’ve got a little container of matcha in the cupboard from making ice cream a while back – definitely time to dig it out again.
Chrystal @ YUMeating says:
I love making green tea lattes. I enjoy them with unsweetened almond milk or the coconut almond mix. I get a bag of Matcha powder on Amazon that is organic. The bag lasts a while because I only use (less than) a tsp for each latte. I’ve also made a batch and then froze the mixture in ice cube trays to blend for a frosty ice cream treat. YUM!
Whitney English says:
Such a great idea! I’m totally trying that…once I buy more Matcha :)
Sam Brown says:
I’ve never seen anything like this recipe before! I’m going to buy the ingredients on my next grocery shop and try it!
