10 Tasty Sandwiches That Are Processed Meat-Free
I’ve been weary of processed meat for a while now.
The claims against this common sandwich stuffer range from the somewhat benign — it’s high in salt — to the truly terrifying — some of it isn’t even comprised of actual meat (cough, cough – Subway).
Another unsavory accusation is that most processed meats are full of nitrites, which can morph into other carcinogenic molecules inside the body and may cause cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
With last week’s announcement from the World Health Organization that processed meat and red meat are definitely carcinogenic and their consumption leads to an increased risk of bowel cancer, people are starting to take these claims more seriously.
And it’s not just red meat products that we have to be worried about, the WHO says any products produced through curing, salting, fermentation, and enhancement of flavor are included (like chicken).
Cancer Research UK estimates that 21% of bowel cancers are caused by red and processed meat.
