Food For Thought Friday
I use traveling as a time to catch up on the sometimes 3-month stack of fitness and fashion magazines that have accumulated in my mailbox.
I’ve always been a big fan of magazines like Self, Women’s Health, Glamour, Cosmo, and many more. But ever since I entered the “real world” six years ago, I haven’t had much time to lounge around leisurely perusing my favorite zines and ripping out the pages to try a new recipe, craft, or circuit workout.
So when I have a long span of time traveling without an internet connection (thanks a lot United), I use it to brief myself on what I’ve missed from the print world.
Today I flew from Los Angeles to Michigan to visit my grandparents and the trip took nearly 9 hours (erg, don’t ask), and I managed to get through about four mags.
Here are the top three most interesting tidbits of health news I found today:
Fast eaters are as much as 18 pounds heavier than slow eaters and two and a half times more likely to suffer from Type 2 Diabetes. -Glamour
The mag says that your body still processes feelings of fullness up to 35 minutes after swallowing. If you eat super fast, you might not realize you’re extremely full until it’s too late and you’ve over eaten.
Wow. I think that was written specifically for me. I’ve usually wolfed down my entire plate before others have even cut their meat. I often find myself still feeling hungry right after my meal, then uncomfortably full later. I’m going to try to remember this next time and give myself a full 35 minutes post-meal before deciding if I really need more food.
Relaxing music can ease anxiety. -SELF
This one is a little self explanatory/obvious? but good to remember and use as a tool the next time you’re super stressed.
According to researchers at McGill University, slow tempo and low pitch music lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increases levels of your body’s happy drug, dopamine.
Most of my favorite music is low-key and laid back and now I see why I enjoy it so much. As a Type A, typically anxious person, chill music really helps level me out.
Need some chillaxing recommendations? Here are some of my favorite zone out tunes(as pulled from my “Massage Music” playlist):
The Great Escape by Patrick Watson
Love Love Love by Of Monsters and Men
Sweet Avenue by Jets to Brazil (thanks Katie Thiele)
Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey
When the Night Comes by Dan Auerbach
You’re welcome.
Exercising with someone who is in better shape than you can help you workout longer. -SELF
I thought this one was actually counter-intuitive because usually people get discouraged by comparing themselves to others.
However, a study from Michigan State University found that people exercised up to 208% longer than usual when they were with a more fit pal.
So grab your girlfriend with the best bod and use her fab physique to spur your own fitness makeover.
