The Hula-Hoop Workout: Hot or Hype?
Unless you work at a day care, I’m guessing you haven’t hula hooped in quite some time.
It’s not really something most adults do for any reason on a regular basis.
That all changed for me when I was asked to review the FXP Hula Hoop Fitness System recently.
The FXP Hula Hoop is specially designed and weighted for workouts. At just about 2 lbs, and with a certifications from ACE and AFTA as the first official hula hoop workout, this piece of equipment is not the same as the toy you may have played with as a kid.
I was a little incredulous about the whole thing when I first heard about it. A hula-hoop workout? Give me a break.
I have a pretty open mind though, and have tried everything from pole-dancing to a “circus workout,” so I thought I’d give it a whirl.
The system comes with four different workout DVD’s, but I wanted to get some fresh air. So with my portable hoop in tow, I headed to the park with Mr. Chow to try it out.
Aside from being pretty fun, it actually lives up to it’s claims. Hula hooping is not easy — I was sweating within 5 minutes. The workout is based on techniques from Pilates, Yoga, Barre, and cardio interval training.
If you’d like to try out this innovative new workout for yourself, FXP Fitness is currently doing an amazing giveaway.
The Grand Prize Package includes:
FXP Hula Hoop and Carrying Case
FXP Yoga Mat
FXP Diet Plan
FXP 7 DVD Workout Series

This looks pretty cool, I’ve heard of the hula hoop workout before but never tried it….as for the weirdest, I’m thinking the pole workout is going to come out on top lolz!!
Davida @ The Healthy Maven says:
This is super random but like 6 years ago my family got a Wii and I was obsessed with “Wii Fit” and especially the hula hup workout. I never thought I would get in a good workout by standing on a board and shaking my hips but it totally worked…is that weird? I’m weird.
Whitney English says:
I always wanted a Wii Fit! Super jealous. Not weird at all :)
Kristina @ Damn Ten Pounds says:
This is awesome! Did you get any funny looks at the park? We used something similar in my old Pilates class, but it was much smaller. We didn’t hula with it, but we used the ring to engage our core and all that jazz. Not gonna lie, I’m pretty disappointed with the lack of Mr. Chow pics.
Whitney English says:
Oh no! I will be sure to take more Chow pics next time. And, yes, I got looks. But they were looks of awe :)
Jody - Fit at 56 says:
I think it does have benefits for core & obliques & other areas. I have read about others that do hula hoop work & love it!
Kristy @ Southern In Law says:
Funnily enough, I was actually sent this “fitness hula hoop” to try out for the blog and it was more like a torture device than a piece of exercise equipment. It was weighted and had all of these lumps and bumps in the inside that supposedly made the workout more effective – but all it did was give us bruises!
A regular weighted hula hoop I think I could do, but not a torture device ;P
Whitney English says:
Oh wow, this definitely did not give me bruises! That’s so weird. Mine wasn’t bumpy either :/ Are you sure it was the same one?
Chelle says:
Any weighted hula hoop will leave bruises for the first week or so. Every time you learn to hoop on a new body part: hands chest shoulder, knees, elbow, foot, etc…..the bruises will appear until your body quickly adjusts. :)
Natalie @ lovenataliemarie says:
I’ve never been a good hula hooper. *le sigh…*
Julie says:
I had one of those huge weighted ones for fun. I was only a good hula hooper with that thing and nothing else. It was a total thing where I was living, which was hippie town USA… not Austin but Asheville, NC.
Whitney English says:
Asheville sounds fun :)

Louise@FitRadiance says:
I used to love my hula hoop as a kid! I actually thought about buying one not that long ago. I doubt I’d even be able to do it these days though haha, but it does look fun :)
Brittany @ Barr & Table says:
I have to admit, I love hula hooping so this sounds like a blast! I may or may not have impressed some of my old co-workers south my skillz just a few months back haha
Sam Brown says:
I used to love hula hooping and I’d totally be keen to give this a try! Though I am kinda surprised it can give you such a good workout but I guess when you’re a kid you don’t really notice getting puffed!
Love your blog!
Sam xx
Bethann says:
I hula hooped with my neighbor this weekend and my obliques are still sore! I did not remember it being that hard!
Marian says:
Hula Hooping gives you an excellent workout and burns off calories quickly. I have tried many times to become proficient at it but without much success. I am going to give it another go and I will definitely try for the Giveaway with FXP Fitness.
Whitney English says:
You’re right, it’s not that easy! But it is fun and effective.
