“Momgarita” Margarita Mocktails + A Ton of Tasty Avocado Recipes
I recently hosted an avocado tasting party full of delicious, heart-healthy bites and refreshing “MOMgaritas.” Get the tasty recipes below! This post is sponsored by Fresh Avocados – Love One Today®
Avoiding fat is so 1990’s, these days everyone knows that eating fat doesn’t automatically make you fat and that you need to consume a good amount for optimal health.
In case you’re not a nutrition nerd like me, here’s a little background on fat…
Dietary fats, particularly good fats, should not be avoided. It is essential to eat some fats because they are a major source of energy and help the body absorb fat-soluble nutrients.
There are two kinds of fats: unsaturated and saturated. The key to healthful eating is balancing the right amounts of the right types of fats. Eating foods high in unsaturated fats, like fresh avocados, in place of foods high in saturated fats has been shown to help reduce risk factors for disease and promote overall health.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans emphasizes that small shifts like minimizing saturated fats and maximizing good fats, like avocados, can make a big difference in promoting overall health. To help spread this message, I recently hosted a Love One Today® avocado tasting party and shared some of my favorite heart-healthy avocado recipes with my friends and family.
On the menu:
- Heart-Healthy Avocado and Mango Kick-Starter Smoothies
- Kale Avocado Salad with Roasted Carrots
- Jackfruit Nachos with Vegan Nacho Cheeze Sauce
- Black Bean + Veggie Quesadillas
All of the recipes were a hit – particularly the smoothies, which were enjoyed by guests young and old.
I really enjoyed the kale avocado salad and was especially excited to learn a new technique for working with kale – using mashed avocado instead of olive oil to massage it. In case you’ve never tried it before, let me tell you, kale enjoys a good massage ;)
It helps break down the fibrous strands and makes this tough leafy green more palatable.
I usually massage kale with oil but this recipe had me mash avocado into the leaves instead. It worked brilliantly and added a nice creamy consistency to the dish.
The jackfruit nachos and quesadillas, despite being plant-based were also a big hit – even with my omnivorous friends.
And while my little man couldn’t enjoy the tasty bites, he partook in the party festivities by donning a Baby-cado costume!
Because we had several guests who were not drinking (besides the babies), I created a tasty “Momgarita” Margarita Mocktail recipe!
- 4 cans of lime or orange sparkling water
- 1 cup orange juice
- ¼ cup lime juice
- 2-4 tablespoons agave syrup
- Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher with ice.
As any dietitian, would (and because I love them so much), I used this opportunity to share with my friends and family a few tips for incorporating healthy fats into their diet and I’m going to share them with you today!
Here are five ways to get more healthy fat into your diet:
- Add nut butter to dips or use as a spread.
- Incorporate fresh avocados into dips, smoothies, sandwiches, salads, or use as a substitute in baking.
- Sauté or bake veggies in olive or avocado oil.
- Substitute the butter in baked goods with mashed avocado, banana, or applesauce.
- Add flax, hemp or chia seeds to oatmeal, smoothies, salads, or toast.
FYI, if you’re interested in hosting your own avocado-inspired soiree, you can get a ton of yummy recipes on the Love One Today website.
