A Bike Ride to Kick Diabetes’ Butt
What’s better than torching calories during a lovely bike ride down Santa Monica beach?
Doing it for a great cause!
Last week I spent a morning taking in Santa Monica’s sunshine and fresh air while helping to raise awareness for the American Diabetes Association‘s upcoming Tour de Cure.
Every year the ADA hosts a bike ride to raise money for Diabetes research, but this year they’re launching a women’s series. They hope to get more females involved in biking and to take the focus off competition and put it on camaraderie. The ride is on October 27th along the gorgeous coast of Santa Barbara.
We kicked off the series with this mini ride, hosted by Broadway star Marissa Jaret Winokur.
The cause is very close to her heart. Marissa has a close friend suffering from Diabetes who is undergoing a liver transplant this month.
She’s also extremely passionate about diet, fitness, and healthy living, so the charity just makes sense for her. The actress lost 60 pounds last year in an effort to improve her health and set a good example for her 5-year-old son Zev.
We had a blast on the ride.
Biking, even casually like we were, is a great way to burn calories and have a good time doing it. On a leisurly ride, you can clock about 280 calories per hour. Kick it up to a fast pace and we’re talking over 700 calories!
You can rent bikes like we did and cruise the Santa Monica coast for only $10 an hour from Perry’s Cafe.
Check back later this week for my full interview with Marissa about how she got in shape and how she keeps the weight off.
If you’d like more information about the ADA’s Tour de Cure or would like to sign up for the ride, head over to their website.
It costs $15 to enter and includes a fitness expo, lunch, and several other ride day activities.
Don’t let excuses hold back. With a choice of an 8-mile, 37-mile, or 67-mile ride, beginners and pros alike will enjoy event.
And if helping your fellow man (or woman) while working your booty off doesn’t inspire you to jump on a bike, maybe a 50% off a stay at Santa Barbara’s famed Bacara Resort and Spa will.
Thanks to Puma for my sweet yellow kicks that went great with my new Tour de Cure top. Get Axel Women’s Sneakers for only $50 right now online. Super comfy and great for cross training.
