Bethany Hamilton’s Pre-Wedding Diet & Fitness Routine
As a professional athlete, Soul Surfer Bethany Hamilton always needs to be in tip top shape.
But with her wedding quickly approaching (it’s sometime this month), this inspirational chick is putting in the extra effort to look fab for her big day.
“This was the first time I tried the SurfSet workout and I loved it,” she told me after. “It’s awesome. I can see how it would help if you wanted to get into surfing but it’s also just a fun, unique workout. It totally activates the muscles you use in the ocean.”
As we refueled with some Zico after our surf-sesh, I grilled Bethany about her big day.
Q&A with Bethany Hamilton
W: A lot of brides up the ante on their workouts pre-wedding, have you been kicking your fitness routine into high gear?
BH: I’ve definitely been working harder. I’m always active and fit for surfing but I’ve definitely got bridal brain. It’s only one day of your life you might as well work extra hard and look extra amazing.
W: What workouts are you loving right now?
BH: I love so some kind of workout every single day, because for me surfing isn’t a workout. It’s like walking. Lately, I’ve been working on running. I went on a 5K run recently for an event and I was kind of huffing and puffing, and it was just a 5K! So I’ve been working on that. Sometimes on my runs I will stop and do lunges, jumpsquats and duck-walks. I also like the TRX because you can bring it anywhere. My friends and I will bring it to the park and set it up on a tree and just workout outdoors.
W: Do you and your adorable fiance Adam Dirks work out together?
W: What about your diet, has that changed for your wedding plan?
BH: I’ve been trying to stay away from sugar and desserts. I like pounding a lot of vegetables and veggie juice with low sugar. I have a home juicer. I don’t use much carrot or fruit. I do a lot of cucumber, parsley, celery, lemon, and ginger. It’s more of a green juice. I’ll still eat a little dark chocolate every once in a while though so I don’t go crazy.
W: Alright, so give it up… what does your wedding dress look like?!
BH: It’s a princess dress (*beaming*). I’m very excited to wear it.
W: And you already live in one of the most beautiful honeymoon destinations (Maui), so how are you going to top that for your post-wedding getaway?
BH: We’re going on a cabin adventure and have a fun hike planned. I really love being outside.
Bethany’s friend, celebrity trainer Andrea Orbeck also participated in the bridal boot camp with us, so I took the opportunity to get her top three diet tips for Bethany, and any bride:
- Knock out the sugar. Looks like B’s on the right track with this one! I’m a fan of carbohydrates, we need them for energy but we have an abundance of sugar. Opt for stevia. Fructose (the sugar found in fruit) is still a sugar. So, if you eat it in abundance, you can gain weight. Combine it with slow digesting proteins like legumes, nuts, and cheese so you can control the glycemic index. Eat it post-workout and not too late at night.
- Dominate your plate with things that are plant based.
- Make sure your proteins are lean and clean.
