BurnThis: Social Media For Your Sweat Sesh
Almost every aspect of our lives and personalities is highlighted and broadcast for our friends and “followers” on social media.
There’s Facebook for stalking that hot guy you met at the bar last night your friends, Instagram for your selfies, Pose for showcasing your knockoff Chanel bag, Twitter for your witty musings, Pinterest for your hopes and dreams, YouTube to display your undeniable vocal talent, LinkedIn to search for a better job while you’re at work, FourSquare to prove how “in the mix” you are, and Google plus for — well — no one is really sure about that one.
It only makes sense that eventually someone would create a social media network for fitness. I mean, #FitFam and #Fitness have been trending on Twitter for weeks now. People (not just the ones who read and blog about it) like to get their sweat on.
Well, someone did. Three hot chicks actually.
BurnThis is a new app for booking classes, connecting with your friends, and “making your sweat social.”
Available in Los Angeles, NYC, Chicago, Miami and coming to a city near you, BurnThis compiles times and locations of the hottest fitness studios in your area so you can easily book classes on your phone. You can either pay for them on the spot, or if you already have an existing package, it pops right up so you can use that instead.
With the app you can follow your friends and see what classes they’re taking and find out about cool events in your area. Hence, making your burn a fun social activity.
Now when your flaky friend says she’s going to meet you at barre class, you can check and see that she actually signed up, and isn’t going to bail like last time!
It’s a great way to motivate yourself to stay on track with your fitness goals with a built in support system of friends to get you there.
As someone who loves to try a new classes, and meets more friends at bootcamp than at the bar, I was psyched to join.
Immediately upon registering, you’re asked to pick what kind of “burner” you are. Naturally, I picked Work Hard, Play Hard.
Some other options are Gym Rat, Class Junkie, Yogi, and Weights Before Dates (love this one).
The first friend I used the app to connect with was Monica, one of BurnThis’ co-creators.
We decided to hit up Exhale in Venice for their popular Core Fusion Barre class.
It just so happened that the spa’s creator Fred Devito was the one teaching the class, and I was pumped to learn from the master.
Within the first 5 minutes of class, we had to hold a 2-minute plank. Yikes!
I’ve only ever held a plank for over a minute one time in my life, and I certainly wasn’t expecting it at that moment. It definitely set the tone for the rest of the workout.
Many times throughout the class as I was wincing through the burn, I looked over to Monica who was also powering through, and it helped knowing I was not alone in this struggle. Working out with friends really does help you stay motivated and in the zone.
Post-class, we hung around for a bit to stretch (literally).
BurnThis is a totally free app, and as you can see, it makes your workouts a lot more fun. And as an added bonus, they offer several exclusive nationwide deals to app members every month.
This month they’re doing a promo at Exhale in Venice for 5 Core Fusion Barre classes for only $50. That’s only $10 for the usually $22 class.
But wait — I’ll do you one better. Today I’m giving away a package!
Download BurnThis on your iPhone and enter your user name in the Rafflecopter widget below for entry. The winner will be chosen on Friday.
Happy Motivational Monday!
Katy says:
I was actually supposed to go to an Exhale class on Saturday but couldn’t make it (so I guess I’m the flakey friend?) Hope I win so I can give it another go!
Brittany @ Barr & Table says:
What a fun app! Wish I was in LA!
Bethann Wagner says:
Now if BurnThis could check traffic and alert me for when I need to leave and give voice guidance on what route I need to take to avoid being lat to class, that would be PERFECT! I think and Google Maps collaboration is in order!
Whitney English says:
Haha I need that too! I’m always running late to class!
Dani says:
I’ve only tried Exhale at the Fairmont hotel. Would love to try this studio in Venice! Would be a nice class to mix in with my weekly Pilates Platinum routine.
